Ernest Borgnine Dies at 95

Longtime screen star Ernest Borgnine died Sunday of renal failure, his spokesman Harry Flynn told the Associated Press. He was 95.

He was surrounded by his family at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to the report.

While he often played the bad guy, Borgnine – who was known for his off-screen professionalism and friendliness – enjoyed a six-decade career that was also filled with many affable roles, from his sensitive, Oscar-winning turn as a homely Bronx butcher who finds love in 1955's Marty, to his popular Lieutenant Commander Quinton McHale on ABC's 1962-66 World War II sitcom McHale's Navy.

The character of the gruff McHale came easily. Born in Connecticut in 1917, Borgnine joined the Navy in 1935 and served for 10 years, reaching the rank of Gunner's Mate 1st Class.

After fighting in World War II, he began to pursue acting – specifically in the theater, making his Broadway debut in 1949 as a male nurse in the comedy Harvey.

Moving to Los Angeles in 1951, Borgnine received his big break as Sergeant "Fatso" Judson in 1953's Best Picture of the Year From Here to Eternity alongside Frank Sinatra, whose character he bullied. From there came character roles, including the psychotic villain who threatens Spencer Tracy in Bad Day at Black Rock.

Stayed in the Spotlight
Other notable roles included helicopter pilot Dominic Santini on TV's Airwolf and as a doorman on the '90s sitcom The Single Guy. Recently, he provided the voice as the superhero Mermaid Man in the animated SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2011, he received the Screen Actors Guild's Life Achievement Award.

Borgnine's biggest box-office success was the 1972 all-star disaster movie The Poseidon Adventure, in which he played Detective Lieutenant Mike Rogo, married to a former hooker (Stella Stevens). Although, besides Marty and From Here to Eternity, his most critically successful movie was the 1969 Western The Wild Bunch.

As he noted in a 1966 interview, "The Oscar made me a star, and I'm grateful. But I feel had I not won the Oscar I wouldn't have gotten into the messes I did in my personal life."
Borgnine had four children and was married five times, including to Broadway diva Ethel Merman in 1964. The headline-making marriage lasted less than six weeks – and decades later was compared to the short-lived union of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.

Borgnine later called the Merman marriage the "biggest mistake of my life. I thought I was marrying [singer] Rosemary Clooney." (He said the marriage fell apart on their honeymoon overseas, where fans knew him but didn't recognize her.)

His final marriage, in 1973 to Tova Traesnaes, a skin-care mogul, endured until his death. In 2007, he told AP about their union: "That's longer than the total of my four other marriages."

Eva Rausing may have died a week before she was found, police believe

Eva Rausing, the wife of the Tetra Pak heir Hans Kristian Rausing, was found dead at home in west London.

Detectives are investigating whether one of the heirs to the Tetra Pak drinks carton fortune lived with his wife's body for up to a week after her death in their Belgravia mansion in London.

Hans Kristian Rausing was being treated in hospital on Wednesday after being arrested when detectives discovered the body of 48-year-old Eva Rausing in a bedroom during a search of the couple's home.

It emerged on Wednesday that part of the investigation into what detectives are describing as her "unexplained" death is examining how long she might have lain in her home before police arrived. A postmortem on Tuesday proved inconclusive and further tests are being carried out to establish the cause of death, which could have taken place up to a week ago.

Police from the Met's homicide and serious crime command have yet to interview Mr Rausing, 49. Scotland Yard said he remained under arrest but had been transferred to a hospital for treatment, and police officers were present. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening and it is believed he is being treated in the Maudsley hospital for drug-related issues.

The couple have struggled for many years with drug addiction. They narrowly escaped prison in 2008 after heroin and £2,000 worth of crack cocaine were found at their home when Mrs Rausing was arrested after trying to smuggle several wraps of cocaine into a reception at the American embassy in Grosvenor Square.

Mr Rausing, an heir to the £4.5bn Tetra Pak fortune, was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs after being seen driving erratically in south London on Monday. When officers went to his home in Cadogan Place to search for more drugs, they discovered Mrs Rausing's body in an upstairs bedroom. They will want to question him about whether he was living with the body for up to a week without alerting the authorities.

At the couple's Belgravia mansion on Wednesday police stood guard at the door. A well-wisher left two red roses in Mrs Rausing's memory and neighbours spoke of the reclusive couple who were rarely seen outside their home.

But those who benefited from their philanthropic work paid tribute to Mrs Rausing, who supported a number of addiction charities, and was a trustee of the Prince of Wales's charity The Prince's Foundation for Building Community.

Nick Barton, the chief executive of Action on Addiction, said: "Everyone involved with Action on Addiction is devastated to hear the news of Eva Rausing's untimely death.

"Eva worked tirelessly for years, without any desire for public recognition and despite her own health issues, to help people and charities in the addiction field through her wonderfully generous support, both as a trustee and a donor."

An insight in into the Rausings' drug problems emerged in 2008 after Mrs Rausing was caught with drugs as she tried to enter the US embassy in London. Court documents revealed she was carrying about 10g of crack cocaine, 2.5g of heroin and 2.35g of diethylpropion, a banned stimulant and appetite suppressant.

A further drugs stash, 220mg of diazepam, used to treat anxiety, was also found in her Renault Clio car and during a search of the couple's home officers found 5.63g of crack cocaine, 2.9g of heroin and almost 52g of cocaine.

The couple faced drugs charges but the prosecution was formally discontinued and they both accepted conditional cautions.

After the hearing, the Rausing family said they "hope[d] with all their hearts" that the couple could "overcome their addiction", and that they would support them.

As part of their caution, the couple were required to attend a four-month drug rehabilitation programme.

In a statement following her arrest in 2008, Mrs Rausing said: "I have made a serious mistake which I very much regret. I intend to leave as soon as possible to seek the help that I very much need. I have made a grave error and I consider myself to have taken a wrong turn in the course of my life. I am very sorry for the upset I have caused. I thank my family and friends for their kindness and understanding."

The American-born Mrs Rausing, the daughter of a wealthy Pepsi executive, met her husband in the 1980s when they were both being treated at a US drug rehabilitation centre.

Though he was born into relatively modest middle-class circumstances in Sweden, Hans Kristian Rausing's life was transformed by the vast wealth generated by his grandfather's packaging invention, which permitted milk to be kept fresh without the need for refrigeration.
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02273/eva2_2273903b.jpg
His father, Hans Rausing Sr, moved the family to Britain in the 1980s to avoid Sweden's higher tax regime, and in 1996 sold his half of the Tetra Pak company to his now late brother Gad for almost £5bn.

The company is now controlled by Gad Rausing's three children, Jorn, Finn and Kirsten, who are based in Sweden. Hans Rausing Sr, now in his 80s, lives in East Sussex and is thought to have a personal fortune worth almost £6bn.

Hans Kristian Rausing has two sisters, the older of whom, Lisbet, studied at Berkeley and Harvard and went on to be a research fellow at Imperial College. Sigrid Rausing, his other sister, owns the literary magazine Granta and the publishing firm Portobello books, and is a noted philanthropist.

In an interview in 2004, she said great wealth was something that was not always easy to come to terms with. "Be open about it and be active with it," she said. She has said that her philanthropic habit developed partly from guilt, "but I think it was probably shame, if I can make that distinction. People knew you had money, so you could never say: 'Come back next month.'"

Eva and Hans Kristian Rausing were well known philanthropists, supporting, among others, charities working in the arts, sport and addiction. She was a patron of one charity, the Mentor Foundation, which worked to help people out of addiction and also boasts the Queen of Sweden, Queen Noor of Jordan and Prince Talal bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia as honorary trustees.

Prince Charles, with whom Hans Kristian Rausing is said to be on first-name terms, has described him as "a very special philanthropist" because of his support for drugs charities.

Dolphy fights for his life

http://www.ebenta.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/dolphy.jpg
KING OF COMEDY Dolphy (Rodolfo Vera Quizon) who made millions of Filipinos laugh in a movie and stage career that spans seven decades is in critical condition at Makati Medical Center.

http://thefilipinoconnection.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/dolphy2.jpg
Dolphy’s wish is for a short and swift close to his long-running road show.

“It’s easier for us to accept this because we don’t want to see him suffering,” said his son, actor-musician Ronnie Quizon.

“He once told me that he didn’t want to suffer—he wants to go swiftly,” Ronnie told Inquirer Entertainment. “I prefer him to go the way he wants to go, be it with a blaze of glory or in a whimper. I’m a dutiful son. I will try to grant his wishes, regardless of what I really want to happen.”

For almost seven decades, Rodolfo Vera Quizon made his countrymen laugh, but this time somber family and friends are appealing for prayers for the ailing “King of Comedy.”

The appeal was made after the comedian’s health took a turn for the worse on Wednesday.

“His kidney is no longer functioning properly,” his son Eric Quizon said. “We are still hoping for a miracle, but we will accept whatever God will give to us.”

Although his condition slightly improved on Monday, Dolphy was still in a “very critical” state, Eric said Wednesday.

Eric told reporters at Makati Medical Center: “His vitals are stable, but it can change anytime. Since his hemoglobin count decreased, he is undergoing a blood transfusion, too. His lungs and kidneys are very weak.”

Eric explained that his dad was now suffering from toxic metabolic encephalopathy.

In a televised interview, he said that his father had survived “10 bouts of pneumonia since his birthday last year.”

“He’s hanging on,” Eric said.

84th birthday

Dolphy, who will mark his 84th birthday on July 25, was rushed to the hospital 13 days ago due to a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), described as a “progressive illness.”

Eric said  his father had been “in and out of consciousness, but he is still fighting.”

“We hope that we will still have him with us,” he said.

In an earlier interview with the Inquirer, Eric said  the family had not made big plans for his coming birthday. “It all depends on his health.”

He said Wednesday: “I know that for the last couple of days that our fellow Filipinos have been praying for our father … the prayers give him strength.”
http://www.manilatimes.net/images/news/Headlines/year_2012/jun_2012/dolphy20120621.jpg http://www.interaksyon.com/entertainment/assets/media/2012/07/Dolphy_4734.jpg
Eric’s brother Epy on Wednesday told the Inquirer that his family “greatly appreciates our countrymen’s show of love and support for our father. We need prayers during this trying time.”

Epy said that some of his siblings were flying in from the United States and Australia.

“We are all here. Just like any family that’s undergoing a crisis, it’s a very tough time for us.” Particularly since they had to undergo this problem under the glare of the spotlight, Epy said.

“But we are not complaining. We understand that it’s part of my dad’s work and that media people are also just doing their job,” he said.

Still hanging on

Last December, Dolphy first had his most serious health scare due to his COPD. Members of his family have since braced themselves for the worst, but still remain optimistic, said a source.

“When he had a heart bypass, 15 years ago, he didn’t want to discuss [his passing], but when he learned that he was suffering from COPD, he started talking to us …  he fixed everything,” Eric said.

Ronnie said that when the King of Comedy found out about his COPD in 2009, the comedian began talking to his kids separately.

“We’ve had our moments, especially when I go to his house to visit,” Ronnie shared. “Dad once said he would give something to me, but I told him,  ‘let’s not talk about that right now, Dad.’ I would try to resist this because it felt like he was already bequeathing things to me,” he said.

“Our relationship isn’t like what he has with my other brothers (actors) Eric or Epy or Vandolph, tender  and persistent. I’m not like that. We talk man-to-man. I open up to him and he listens and gives advice.”

Family and friends gathered at the hospital Wednesday, Eric said.  “Some children and grandchildren have donated blood,” he said.

Among those who were in the hospital on Wednesday was the comedian’s longtime partner, singer-actress Zsa Zsa Padilla.

In a previous interview, Padilla told the Inquirer that her partner’s illness had been heartbreaking.

Padilla had to quit the concert “Icons at the Arena,” held on Saturday, as she has been keeping Dolphy company in the ICU, along with his children from a previous relationship, Eric and Epy.

“Like anyone [in her situation], I am sure Zsa Zsa is devastated. But we are here to support her. We are turning to each other during this difficult time,” Eric said.

Overwhelmed

Ronnie said the family was overwhelmed with requests for prayers for the comedian.

“It gives me goose bumps just reading about it on social networking sites. I think it’s what’s actually keeping him alive. Even my classmates back in Grade 1 sent me messages. It’s really nice to know that my dad is well-loved. We’re really feeling the support right now,” he said.

“Everything is possible with God. Whatever happens to our father, we’re prepared, although it’s only now that we’re getting organized. Our priority is to keep him alive. Walang magandang gamot at magaling na doktor kapag kinuha ka na. Everything is within the Lord’s hand.”

Celebrities took to the Internet to show their love for the legendary comedian whose career spans at least 68 years in various media: from bodabil (live stage shows) to radio, from television to the movies.

Singer-actress Agot Isidro posted on Twitter: “Sending good vibes to the Quizon family. Prayers of healing and recovery for Mang Dolphy.”

Another singer-actress, Sharon Cuneta, appealed for prayers as well.

TV host Raymond Gutierrez posted on Twitter: “Prayers go out to Tito Dolphy and his family. Get well soon to our true National Artist.”

Recently, the campaign to declare the comedian a National Artist gained momentum once again.
